How Many Wedding Guests Should you Have?

Although every wedding has an ideal guest list size, figuring out the right number for your special day can be a tricky affair.  Factors such as your budget, your friends and family, and your personal style both as individuals and as a couple should all be considered as you make this very personal decision.

Pros and Cons of Wedding Guest Lists

Pros and Cons of Wedding Guest Lists

There are pros and cons to having a huge wedding bash or a small, intimate wedding celebration, and you ultimately need to determine what is going to be the best fit for you and your future spouse.   After all, your wedding day is all about the two of you!  Here are some of the arguments for and against both large and small weddings that can help you decide on the perfect number of guests for your wedding:

Big Weddings

Big Weddings

Pro Making the guest list is easy – Potential stress over cutting your guest list, and the resulting arguments you are sure to have with your fiance or family members, won’t be an issue.

Con It will cost more – This should seem fairly obvious, but the more people you invite, the more money you will be spending on everything from catering and drinks to decor and party favors.

Pro You will receive more gifts – The more people you invite to your wedding, the more gifts you’ll get, which may be enticing if you are moving into a new home together.

Con Planning will take a lot of work – Big weddings require a lot of planning, period.  You may want to hire a wedding planner or a coordinator for the day of your nuptials to handle the details you won’t have time for.

Pro It creates a festive environment – If you love a big party, having a large wedding celebration is sure to bring a fun vibe to your day, from a lively dance floor to an all-night reception.

Con It’s less personal – With more guests to greet at some point during your big day, you will have less quality time to spend with those whom you are closest to, including your new spouse!

Small Weddings

Small Weddings

Pro Less planning and stress – It is usually simpler all around when planning a smaller scale wedding.  Your venue can be intimate, you will probably spend a lot less money with fewer guests, and you can nail down the details more quickly and efficiently.

Con Uninvited people may feel snubbed – Keeping your guest list small is a delicate business.  Those who don’t end up with an invite could feel hurt or offended, especially extended family.

Pro You may be able to splurge on what matters to you –  By saving money with your carefully edited guest list, you may be able to afford the elaborate flowers you have been lusting after, an amazing photographer or a stellar local band that will make your big day even more spectacular.

Con The party vibe may get lost – If a wild fiesta is what you are after, you may have a harder time pulling it off with a small guest list since the atmosphere is often more relaxed.  Enlist an outstanding DJ or band to get your guests on their feet to mingle and dance.

Pro It’s More Personal – When your guest list consists of close friends and family, you will be able to spend more quality time with the people who matter the most to you.

Con More to juggle yourself – Many couples planning a small wedding decide to do without a wedding planner, which puts more responsibility on them to make sure every little detail is taken care of before the wedding date arrives.  A wedding coordinator hired just for the day can ensure everything runs smoothly, which will allow you to relax and enjoy.

What do you think? What’s the perfect size wedding?
